Oil Painting: “Tribute”

Title: “Tribute”, Artist: Bernice Troskie, 2013. 880mm x 455mm Oil (mostly) on Canvas;

The Canvas of this artwork is suspended (from nails by cotton string) within the top divider of an early 20^th century traveling trunk. The piece was created as a therapeutic mechanism to process an overwhelming personal loss in the artist’s life, at a time when there was little enough emotional resilience to draw on to begin with.

The Sunflowers are an obvious tribute to an artist who never knew how much the world would love him. “A great fire burns within me, but no one stops to warm themselves at it, and passers-by only see a wisp of smoke” Vincent van Gogh was once quoted as saying.  These bright flowers relentlessly demonstrate in quiet beauty their eternal message: Find and Follow the Light.
