Oil Painting: “The Eye of a Perfect Storm”

Title: “The Eye of a Perfect Storm”, Artist: Bernice Troskie, 2023. 61cm x 91cm, Oil Paint on Canvas.

This artwork arose from the question most people ask themselves in times of human induced chaos; namely “What can I do to make it stop, or at least open people’s eyes and hearts so they are ready to stop.” The answer is of course: show it, describe it, present a vision to people to make them ask themselves; “Is this what I really want?”

This piece also depicts the feeling the artist had when regarding the sorry state of affairs the world over. Like the people of Pompei who the very night before “Never had it so good” looking up at the cloud of fiery ash ready to rain down on everything we have known, loved, and thought to be important, thinking “surely not… not me… not my comfort” and in an instant; buried and fossil-frozen. Until people could once more be free enough of the fight for survival, to spend their time being curious and digging up the past. We joke, and say that; “We never thought the apocalypse would be so slow and expensive.” and we compare it to the fall of great civilizations… but back then, there were always other civilizations, other people doing things somewhere else. But this time, we all seem largely on the same sinking ship, or tethered to it so tightly we’re heading the same way whether we like it or not. It feels like people are running around trying to cork up the volcano, but the rumbling continues. And we; the artists, will paint pictures, tell stories, and make jokes out of the tragedy. Because, in the words of Terry Pratchett: “We who are about to die, will laugh at anything!”
