The End

This piece was created in 2011, and at the time it was inspired by a the idea of a climate apocalypse, a man-made disaster worse than any Nuclear Winter our Noble Scientists could imagine in their deepest moments of despair. Being born in what I now know was a rare period when peace was the most honourable goal, in 1990; I was raised by Idealists, by people like Madiba and Desmond Tutu. I was 12 years old before I realised that not every leader was like them. My generation has taken an understanding of Human Rights and Ethics for granted. Our indoctrination was one of Love, Acceptance, Kindness, Forgiveness, Understanding, and a Valuing of Diversity. Most of my generation don’t question the freedoms of people, considering them part of the fundamental unwritten laws of existence. Now I know, this was all only a small taste of a Utopia we must still strive to fully realize. Now I know that not having “duck-and-cover drills”, bomb education, and weapons handling practice might have done us some harm. Now I see another “End” at the hands of our own species; one which seems to be spiralling out of control, and one which consists of a perfect storm of all the apocalypse scenarios we have ever imagined; all rolled into one. Here in the wreaking tempest, on our fragile ship, I hear the words of The Bard echoing in my head; “Hell is empty, and all the Devils are here”
