Title: “The Lady”, Artist: Bernice Troskie, 2022. 1015mm x 760mm Oil on Canvas;
This artwork was started a few years ago, and constantly had to take a back-seat to other projects, however, she eventually reached her completion as soon as the artist decided on the experimentation this piece would facilitate. The Muse’s voice finally spoke through some historical obsessions, and the art brought forth from those times.
The Byzantium style of religious iconography, added to the stylized figures and patterns of early gospels such as the Book of Kells is quite evident in the aesthetic of the painting, however, the meaning to which they lend themselves is slightly more complicated. The Lady herself is an amalgamation of several strong feminine figures and characters; named for a Terry Pratchett character in the pantheon of the Discworld gods, she echoes a Celtic past. Inspired by the character of Boudica; she is depicted as the goddess Brighid, as are the symbols around her. There was also an attempt to depict the strength of the feminine, and the transition occurring in this current time from a masculine form of functioning to a feminine one, as two elements present in everyone and everything.
