The Labyrinth in itself is often a symbol of an inner journey, and this particular painting was completed at the end of one journey, and the beginning of another. The pattern is also a meditation, and in the process of walking through it’s maze one walks through one’s own mind and thoughts. The little girl is modeled on an old photograph of my grandmother as a 10 year old girl picking daisies with her sister, and the little figure is a recurring one in this artist’s work, a symbol of innocent curiosity. The surrealist atmosphere of the piece is echoed in the river, which has the Dada Performance Theory “flowing” in it:
